From the race coordinator:
First, I apologize to anyone who did not know the second day was canceled due to safety and weather concerns. In the past I have gone down the parking lot and personally told each driver of such a changes. I was not able to do so this time.
The Sunday race was canceled mostly because of road driving safety concerns. The weather report mid day Saturday called for another 18-24 inches of snow. There had been several car accidents on the Grand Mesa Hwy and traveling back to home towns was likely to be a hazardous as well. As it turns out the Highway Department closed the road Sunday morning due to avalanches. The road did not be reopen until Monday.
Second, thank you for coming to the race. It took much more effort than normal to make and maintain the trail due to the weather. People seem to still enjoy the race even so. I personally never thought the trail would last the whole day.
Special thanks to Bruce, Jessie, Wes and the Cedaredge people for helping with setting up the fencing. Thank you to Bruce, Aaron, Linda and Cheri for helping me to dig the fences out the snow for the take down. Thank you Lynn and Bruce for running the race while I was out on the trail.
The plan was to have up to four other snowmobiles to take care of the trail but none of them made it up. With the poor visibility and myself being the only one who knew the trails I felt for safety reason I must be the one to change gates and lay a track for the next race to follow. As it was there was several times ran into to trail berm and almost became stuck. With only one snowmobile we would not have been able to go and rescue anyone.
Thank you again for coming and roughing out another blizzard. Next year I'm sure the weather will be good (fingers crossed).
