Dress appropriately.  As this photo from a past picnic illustrates it can dang hot in August, even in the mountains.

Directions from Denver :

Take Hwy 285 south (towards Fairplay).  About 13 miles past C-470 is Aspen Park (the site of the new King Soopers, a Wendy’s and a Qdoba!).  Ahead you will see an overpass that goes across Hwy 285.  As you approach the overpass, get into the far right lane and be prepared to go right IMMEDIATELY after you go under the overpass.  Then, take an immediate left onto Barkley Road – heading between an ACE Hardware Store and an elementary school.  Barkley Road ends in ½ mile.  Go right onto Hwy 73.  Take the first left onto Shadow Mountain Drive.  In about 2 ½ miles, you will see a LONG guardrail on the left.  The Lavin’s driveway is the 2nd one on the left AFTER the guardrail ends.

Directions from I-70 :

Get off I-70 at the El Rancho exit and go right, up the hill to the stop light at Evergreen Parkway (Hwy 74).
Go right on 74 for several miles, it will go down to 2 lanes at Evergreen Lake and shortly you will come to a light in downtown Evergreen.
Go right on Hwy 73 at this light.    You will pass a driveway entrance for the "Flying J Ranch" then there is a new entrance to an openspace park and the next road on the right is Shadow Mountain Drive.  We are about 3 miles up on the left.  The Lavin’s driveway is the 2nd one on the left AFTER the guardrail ends.
